Residential Treatment For Substance Abuse Prisoners

There is no doubt that illegal drugs are a scourge on our society. These drugs wreck the lives of many people including many young people. Some die as a result of their drug-taking. And crime is largely fuelled by drugs. So when our prisons become crammed with prisoners who have been involved with drugs, the question arises as to what, if anything, should society do for these prisoners.

Some argue that prison is a place of punishment and prisoners should serve their time with few benefits and plenty of hardship. Others take a more humanitarian approach. But whatever your opinion the fact remains that these prisoners may soon be back on our streets and could possibly become involved in drugs again. If so these people may again turn to crime to sponsor their addiction.

That is why money has been made available to different levels of government to run programs in jails for prisoners who have been involved with illegal drugs. The aim of the programs is to help the prisoners become drug-free and to be well prepared for life once they are released.

In some cases the annual expenditure on substance abuse treatment programs tops the $10 million mark. But there are conditions including the following.

The money is only provided if the treatment center is a separate part of the jail, if the program deals with the whole person and not just their drug addiction, programs must run for at least 6 months and must have specific goals regarding the issue of helping drug addicts.

One aspect of the whole person approach is to assist with work skills. Many prisoners were unemployed people who saw drugs as either a way to make money or to relieve their despondency at not being able to find work. By giving the prisoners classes aimed at developing work skills, the prisoners, upon their release, will have the ability to find work and thus avoid the need to make money through drugs.

A residential treatment center for those suffering substance abuse will also consider the social and emotional aspects of the inmates. Many people lack the ability to relate well with others and many suffer from psychological distress. They have come from a broken home – and many have – and lack the ability to1000understand such things as love, consideration and empathy. They may have a strange and distorted view of the world and their fellow citizens. Any program which seeks to help the drug-addicted prisoner recover from their addiction must also help them gain work skills, learn to appreciate and consider the rights of others and help heal their emotional scars. It’s a wide-ranging task which must be undertaken if people are not to re-offend.

Of course it is hard to know if the programs are effective. A prisoner may be set free but it could be months or even years before they can be given the all-clear as far as criminal behavior is concerned. Not every inmate will be successful once released back into society but every prisoner who does not re-offend is saving the community a great deal of money and suffering.

Maritime Law

If you are planning to take a cruise in the near future, or if you frequently take cruises, there is a lot of information you may need to keep yourself safe and secure while aboard a ship. Many people take for granted their rights as a citizen of the United States, without considering the fact that once their ship leaves port, they’re often in unfamiliar waters that are often lawless.

The first step to a safe journey is to pack well and keep a written inventory of your belongings at home, in case everything is lost. Pack your most important belongings, such as prescriptions, jewelry, eyeglasses, money, identification, and tickets, on your person during cruises. Many cruise lines have outdated locks, and all cruises handout copies of your room key to housekeepers, housekeeping managers, and others, so it’s important to have your most important items with you at all times.

While aboard cruises, a person should be aware of the language that is printed on each boarding pass. Maritime law is unlike other branches of law, and it is important to abide by the regulations printed on your ticket. In most cases, you only have 6 months to file written claims in case of injury or theft that occurred on a cruise.

Remember, cruises are like towns, and every population has a criminal element. It is important to stay in public areas of cruises, and to secure your door at night, just as you would if you were at home. Cruise line security officers often patrol in plain clothes, but if you need assistance, you should approach anyone in uniform and ask them to identify a security officer to you. Remain vigilant about your own security and safety, so that you can enjoy your cruises without learning more about maritime law.

Cruise Ship Job

Have you ever imagined what it would be like working on a cruise ship? Traveling to different ports and destinations, world-class food, meeting new people and the perks that come with being employed for a major cruise line make it seem like one of the most exciting jobs- compared to being stuck in an office.

If you love to travel, employment on a cruise ship might be a great option. Spending winters is warm climates and summers in Alaska doesn’t sound so bad? Or traveling to remote parts of Europe, South America, Australia or even the Caribbean for work seems like a dream job, especially if meals and accommodations are included.

There are a myriad of benefits to working on a cruise ship for a major cruise line. Aside from traveling to numerous destinations, cruise line employees often receive accommodations, meals, medical care and airline tickets to ports and back home for free. It’s a great way to travel, save money and earn money. Some lines even offer discount rates for friends and family.

However, if you have a family, working on a cruise ship might be more difficult than if you’re single or a student, due to the amount of travel involved. Single people and college students available for summer jobs, or people just looking for an out of the ordinary job are great candidates for this line of work. With so many departments, it literally takes a village to run these massive ships. No matter what your expertise, there are departments ranging from the Deck Department, Beauty Salon Department to the Hotel Operations Department.

Although it’s difficult to imagine, there are downsides to working on a major cruise liner. Cabin fever, compartmentalized, repetitive jobs and catering to the eccentricities of guests can be taxing when it comes to work, especially if you’re working over ten-hour days.

If you enjoy traveling and you’re not committed to family, you may consider a job on a cruise ship. It may just be your ticket to travel!
