Cruising Careers

What would it be like to work on a cruise ship? There seem to be a lot of benefits to working for cruise lines, like free travel, a tightly-knit teamof co-workers to socialize with, and access to international ports on a regular basis. Another benefit to working aboard cruises is that, because you are constantly working, your income is never being spent and thus accrues more quickly.

Unfortunately, most of the websites that you will find if you search for cruise ship jobs are scams, asking for as much as $50 just to submit an application to them, which they claim they will forward to human resources specialists at every major cruise line. The Better Business Bureau has listed these sites, and if you are searching for cruises that are hiring, you should go directly to the cruise line’s website, or check the Better Business Bureau to make sure you are not wasting your time and money on a scam. In addition to listing jobs on cruises, the cruise lines have corporate jobs listed on their websites that may also allow you to travel free on their cruise ships during off-peak seasons.

Scams are not the only thing you should worry about if you are interested in a job on a cruise ship. Employee complaints reveal that unless you have an upper-management position, or a position as a skilled entertainer, your cabin may be shared with as many as 7 other employees, and furnished with bunk beds and nothing else. Also, and especially at peak seasons, you may be expected to work as many as 100 hours a week without a day off, and without an opportunity to leave the ship. Perhaps if you want to work at sea, you would be better off researching a career in the Navy.

Why does it seem like any humanitarian jobs that allow you to travel…?

…require you to have a degree you could never afford to pay off. I want to travel overseas to help out yet it seems like you need to rack up a 40-50k student loan debt to be qualified? Any insight or recommended sources would be GREATLY appreciated!
